Middle Ages of Taekwondo
The Koryo Dynasty which reunified the Korean peninsula after Shilla (A.D. 918 to 1392), had the martial art of Taekkyon made a compulsory subject in exams for selection of military cadets. Taekkyon's techniques became effective weapons, even to kill humans. Martial art skills were the only qualifications required to become a military member of the Koryo Dynasty.
Plain soldiers who mastered Taekkyon techniques were promoted to General. They also selected youth through Taekkyon contests to become military officers. The kings of Koryo Dynasty made Taekkyon contests a compulsory part of military training.
From a story of the Koryo Dynasty at a power contest of Taekkyon techniques Lee - Yi Min punched a pillar of a house with his right hand fist, causing for some of the props of the roof to shake. Another Taekkyon trainer had his fist pierce through a clay wall.
In later years when weapons were more available, the support for Taekkyon slowed down in the Koryo Dynasty moving down to modern Korea, Chosun.
