Present Day of Taekwondo
After World War II when Korea was freed from Japanese rule, the people began rebuilding self reliance and traditional games.
Song Duk-Ki, a Taekkyon master, demonstrated the martial art before the first Korean president, Syngman Rhee on his birthday to differentiate Taekwondo from Japanese Karate, which was introduced when under Japanese rule.
After the Korean War (1950 - 1953), martial art experts began opening taekwondo centres all over the country. An estimated 2000 taekwondo masters were sent to more then 100 countries around the world to train the martial art.
in 1971 Taekwondo was nominated as a national Martial art.
In 1972, Kukiwon was founded and is still the headquarters today.
In 1973 World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) was established.
In 1975 Taekwondo was accepted as an official sport by the United States Athletic Union and the General Association of International sports Federation.
In the 1984 Asian games, Taekwondo was admitted as an official event.
Taekwondo entered the 2000 Sydney Olympic games and since then Taekwondo has been included in every Summer Olympics games and has increased from 103 athletes to 128 athletes.
The first Para - Taekwondo Championships was in 2009, and from then on World Taekwondo Federation has promoted Para - Taekwondo in the Paralympic games.
