In ancient times people defended themselves by using a fighting technique with only their bare hands and body.
As people became more inventive, armour was developed as either an defensive or offensive means and not using the bare hands and body fighting techniques as their primary defensive or offensive means. People still enjoyed bare hand fighting for building physical strength and also to show off their skills in ritual match's.
People built on their techniques from fighting against beasts. This is believed to be where Taekkyon first started. (The picture to the right is a wall painting found in one of the tombs in Koguryo of a beast).
During this period of time, there were three Kingdoms from the Korean Peninsula, two of which had a strong following for the warrior martial art contests. These 3 Kingdoms were rivalling for control by training warriors. These kingdoms were:
KOGURYO which was founded in 37 BC on the Northern part of Korea along Yalu River.
SHILLA was founded in 57 BC South Eastern part of Korea
PAEKJE (also known as Baekje) was founded in 18 BC South West Korea
These Kingdoms were led by well known national leaders with millitery characteristics. As a result of these leaders, martial art training became one of the important subjects of learning for the younger warriors called "hwarang" in the Shilla Kingdom and "sunbae" in Koguryo Kingdom.
